On Wednesday (Aug 28) I received a request to approve an extension to the closure of Vance’s Side Road to September 13th. Knowing this has already been a lengthy closure affecting many residents in the Dunrobin area, I have been reluctant to provide my concurrence. After conversations with staff and getting commitment from them that they would explore all available options with the contractor to speed up the process (including working overnight), I have provided my concurrence agreement.
The structure on Vance’s Side Road has reached the end of its service life and requires rehabilitation. Shortly after construction commenced, the culvert was noted to have deteriorated further than previously observed and complete replacement of the culvert ends is required. This work will require removal and replacement of the asphalt roadway, waterproofing the top of the structure, and additional concrete crack repairs.
I remain unhappy with the timeline for the proposed extension but have been assured that this is a worst case scenario and that the contractor and the City’s construction team will make every effort to expedite the work and limit the length of roadway closure.
I will be checking in regularly with staff to ensure these efforts to minimize the closure continue to be a focus and will provide you with updates.
