Springtime Water Level Observations and Latest Sandbag Depots Now Open in Ward 5

Here is the latest update on water levels from Jim Lethbridge, Area Manager, Emergency Planning and Response with the City of Ottawa's Public Works Department.

The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board’s latest update indicates that water levels are higher than normal this year and may be less predictable in some locations because of ice on the river.

Minor flooding in low-lying areas has been observed on Tweddle Rd and Boisé Lane in Cumberland. This is typical for this elevation of water.

What is not typical is water levels along the Ottawa River being at these levels in mid-March.

Having observed some sandbagging activity at Constance Bay over the past day, we believe people are uncertain of the risk. Indications are that this early rise will soon be followed by a period of stabilization and decline below nuisance flooding levels as more seasonal temperatures return.

We have heard in the past that residents may not feel supported when sand and sandbags are not readily available. As a result, these additional sandbag filling locations are opening in Ward 5 today.

• Lighthouse Lane at Logger’s Way

• Greenland Road dead end at Armitage Avenue

• Moorhead Drive water access

I want to emphasize that this is an early supportive gesture, not an indication of imminent risk of flooding. Should residents feel motivated to make small preparations, weekends are often the time they can more easily devote to such activities. As important, this is the time when residents might inspect downspouts, check sump pumps, or clear drainage paths around their homes.
