Rural Ottawa Youth Mental Health Collective (ROYMHC) is hosting their annual one-day training summit for mentors of rural youth on Sunday, November 17th, 2024. This is a FREE event for those 16 years or older who mentor, coach, volunteer, or engage with youth (ages 12-24) residing in rural Ottawa.
From the ROYMHC Press Release:
The summit will include training in:
Motivational Interviewing (hosted by Living Healthy Champlain): Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centered approach that involves a particular way of understanding our role as a helper and how we can engage with youth in meaningful ways about change and growth. MI is grounded in a willingness to be accepting, compassionate and empowering, which guides all of our conversations.
Incorporating Mental Health into Non-Mental Health Programs (hosted by the Osgoode Youth Association): Through ROYMHC research O-YA has learned that youth would like to receive mental health education through programs that are not mental health focused. O-YA has spent the last year trying out different strategies on ways to incorporate mental health education into programs that are not mental health programs. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about O-YA's successes & failures, ask questions and experience some of their techniques throughout the day.
And choice of training in either:
SafeTALK (hosted by Ottawa Public Health): Teaches individuals to recognize someone with thoughts of suicide and connect them with suicide first-aid resources in Ottawa and surrounding areas. This workshop is not recommended for those who have thoughts of suicide or who have recently lost someone to suicide.
OR
What You Need to Know About Youth and Substance Use (hosted by Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services): Understanding substance use from a trauma informed lens supports effective interventions for youth.
The summit will be held at the Tony Graham Recreation Centre (100 Charlie Rogers Pl, Kanata ON, K2V 1A2) from 8:15am to 4:00pm. As part of this training experience, all participants will receive complimentary lunch, mileage will be compensated and the attendee will receive an honorarium for their participation.
